A Port Moody woman who vanished last week during a two-day cruise with her boyfriend had been thinking about severing their relationship, according to her family.

Fariba Amani was reported missing on a cruise ship somewhere between the Bahamas and Florida on Feb. 29 by her boyfriend of eight months, Ramiz Golshani.

Amani's sister Saloumeh says the missing woman had been looking forward to the vacation, hoping it might help salvage her troubled relationship.

"The idea was she would go on the cruise because maybe the relationship would get better afterwards," she said. "But if it wouldn't then she would break up with him."

After Amani's disappearance, the U.S. Coast Guard launched a rescue effort covering a massive search area of more than 18,900 square kilometres. It was called off last Friday after about 84 hours.

According to reports, the missing passenger was last seen by Golshani at around 1 a.m. Wednesday near the ship's gift shop.

The family, who never met Golshani, have learned Amani contacted private investigator Tom Dolo in November with relationship concerns.

"At the time she felt quite positive that her boyfriend was cheating on her and asked if we could do surveillance on him," Dolo said.

Amani did not end up hiring Dolo, and never told him her boyfriend's name.

CTV News visited Golshani's home Tuesday and spoke to his sister Molenia, who said her brother has no idea what happened to Amani.

"He doesn't know anything. He has gone through interviews with FBI and the States and in the end they told him he's free and he can go," she said.

Golshani has not been charged with anything.

Amani's sister Saloumeh is begging the public to contact police if they saw Fariba during her holiday.

"We will never stop fighting for her. WE want justice for her first, then for our family," she said.
