A truck that struck a 19-year-old woman on an Abbotsford sidewalk Monday was also involved in a hit-and-run just minutes earlier, according to police.

The young pedestrian was hit on Cardinal Avenue around 4:30 p.m. and left pinned underneath the truck, causing her serious injuries that required she be airlifted to a Vancouver-area hospital for treatment.

Witnesses tried frantically to free her from where she was pinned under the front tire.

“We tried to jack the truck up. She was definitely out and the driver was definitely unconscious as well,” said Good Samaritan Rick Lempares.

Lempares added that the driver didn’t look good when he spotted him behind a nearby shopping centre.

“Basically swerving around the corner just behind London Drugs,” he said.

Shortly before that accident, police said the same pickup collided with another vehicle on Automall Drive and was seen speeding away from the area.

No injuries were sustained by either driver in the earlier collision.

“[Witnesses] described the same pickup truck that is at our second scene collide with a pickup truck and flee that area at a high rate of speed,” said Const. Paul Walker.

The 30-year-old driver of the pickup truck was unconscious when police arrived at the scene of the pedestrian accident, and was hospitalized.

The driver is now facing charges of impaired driving by drugs, causing bodily harm. Const. Walker said additional charges are possible.

He said the struck teen is making "remarkable" progress, and is in stable condition and communicating with medical staff.

Anyone who witnessed either collision or has other information to share with police is asked to call 604-859-5225.
