Former work colleagues say they have no idea why the man they knew would have been behind the wheel of a pickup truck that plowed into a restaurant on Thursday, killing two people.

Workers at CP Rail in Coquitlam spoken to by CTV news say that their former senior conductor, Brian Irving, was just an average guy.

But neighbours say that he showed signs of depression, sitting alone near his house and drinking in the back yard.

"He looked angry," said Lindsay Tober, who left the Maple Ridge sushi restaurant seconds before Irving plowed through the window. "Like he had something to do and wanted to do it."

The impact killed 19-year-old SFU university student Maija-Liisa Lisa Corbet and 46-year-old Hyeshim Oh.

Oh was an employee of the restaurant, but wasn't working there at the time. The mother was picking up food for her family.

Also injured in the crash was a nine-year-old boy.

"Seeing the little boy under the truck and everyone trying to help him, lift the truck and help him, it was a horrible thing to see," said Tober.

Irving has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder in connection with the crash.
