Mounties in Richmond, B.C., are investigating after reports of another drone flying in the airspace of Vancouver International Airport.

RCMP received a report Monday night from YVR’s traffic control of a drone flying over the runway on the airport’s north side.

Sgt. Cam Kowalski of the Richmond RCMP said police are concerned that drone flying appears to be “a growing trend.”

“The power of these devices are becoming exponentially more powerful so people can fly them from a farther distance away,” he said.

“They can get them up higher in altitude and it affects the aircraft that are on the glide path and puts them in a very dangerous situation which we do not like to see."

Despite patrols and roadblocks in the area, police were unable to find the person operating the drone. The investigation continues.

This is the second time in recent months that drones have been caught flying too close to jets at YVR.

Last November, aviation experts expressed outrage over a YouTube video that showed a remote-controlled drone flying dangerously close to an aircraft full of passengers.

Transportation Canada was concerned about the potential for a mid-air collision.

The agency regulates unmanned air vehicles, however, drones that weigh less than 35 kilograms are considered “model aircraft” and don’t fall under the regulations.
