A violent, head-on collision in Surrey, B.C. early Saturday morning killed three men and sent a woman to hospital in critical condition.

Police say a Chevy Cavalier was travelling at a high rate of speed in the wrong lane of Highway 10 when it slammed into an oncoming Nissan Pathfinder at around 2 a.m.

The driver of the Cavalier was killed, as were the two male occupants of the Pathfinder. The female occupant of the SUV was airlifted to hospital, where she remains with very serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The cars were so mangled in the crash that it took hours for officials to remove the bodies from the scene.

Reyna Castro, who lives near the scene of the accident, said she was in bed when she felt the impact of the crash.

"The house shook," Castro said. "I looked out the window and helicopters were hovering all over the place."

Witnesses say the Cavalier had been driving the wrong direction for several blocks prior to the crash.

Police believe speed was a factor in the collision and have not ruled out the possibility that alcohol was involved. RCMP Insp. Randall Marquardt said the Cavalier driver's blood alcohol content will be determined by autopsy.

"If he was of sound mind and not intoxicated, you would know as a driver that you're definitely going the wrong way," Marquardt said. "It's a divided highway."

The victims' names have not been released.

Highway 10 between 132nd and 136th streets was closed in both directions overnight, but has reopened.
