Nineteen-year-old Kevin Craig will make history when he is sworn in as the youngest-ever member of Kelowna, B.C., city council Monday afternoon.

But first, he has to write an end-of-term exam.

Kevin Craig beat out 14 other candidates in a by-election in November to win the seat. Craig will replace Brian Given, who passed away this summer.

The University of British Columbia political science and economics student, who still lives at home with his parents, beat his nearest challenger, Todd Sanderson, by 436 votes.

Despite being at least a decade younger than other councillors, Craig said everyone takes him seriously and treat him with respect.

Craig said he will take on a lighter course load while he is on council.

"I've just accepted the fact I'm going to have bags under my eyes until I'm retired," he told ctvbc.ca.

His term will run through December 2011.
