Two years after 15-year-old Sanjeeve Sharma was killed in a car crash in Surrey, B.C., a teenager has been charged with dangerous driving in the collision.

The driver was just 16 when the Chevrolet Malibu he was driving clipped another car before crashing into a lamppost in June 2009. Sharma, one of two teenage passengers in the Malibu, died in hospital.

The driver, who cannot be named because of his age, is now charged with dangerous driving causing death.

He did not appear in court to face that charge on Wednesday, upsetting Sharma's family members.

"I am very disappointed. Gutless did not show up today. I'm very disappointed. I was ready to see his face," mother Sara Sharma told CTV News.

The Sharma family believes laws need to change so that parents are held responsible for teenage drivers who don't follow the rules of the road.

The matter returns to court next week.
