Mounties are asking the public for help to piece together what happened Sunday night in Surrey.

The Surrey RCMP said a person reported the incident at 12:30 a.m. Monday, but said what they'd witnessed happened a few hours earlier.

In a statement Tuesday, RCMP said the caller told police they saw what appeared to be a gun laying on the roadway near 16 Avenue and the Highway 99 on-ramp.

The apparent firearm was picked up by a person in a dark-coloured SUV.

Officers canvassed the area for witnesses and video surveillance, but they still have not confirmed a gun was involved in the incident.

Anyone with more information is asked to contact the RCMP at 604-599-0502, or to call Crime Stoppers anonymously.
