A Surrey man is dead and police have taken a suspect into custody after what is believed to have been an intentional hit-and-run in the city early Saturday morning.

The 40-year-old victim was found by Surrey RCMP in a parking lot near the Royal Canadian Legion at 106 Avenue and 135A Street just after midnight, according to police.

He was suffering serious life-threatening injuries and died in an ambulance en route to hospital.

Witnesses said the vehicle that struck the man narrowly missed other bystanders. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has since taken over the case, believing the driver was acting intentionally.

With help from witnesses, a 32-year-old male suspect was taken into custody shortly after and his vehicle was seized, IHIT spokesman Sgt. Adam MacIntosh said in a release. Charges have not been laid yet.

“We know there were a lot of other people who saw what happened and we want encourage these people to come forward with their information," said Sgt. Adam MacIntosh of IHIT.
