An East Vancouver high school was locked down Monday afternoon after a 14-year-old student was slashed with a knife.

Police say three girls also believed to be in their mid-teens entered Sir Charles Tupper Secondary School at around 1:30 p.m. and confronted the victim, cutting her on the arm.

Officers arrived shortly after and shut down the school as they searched classrooms for suspects.

The victim sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to BC Children's Hospital to be stitched up.

The motive for the attack is unknown.

One suspect is described as having a slim build and short black hair. She was wearing light-coloured jeans and smelled of marijuana and alcohol.

Another had a medium build and was wearing a long blue skirt. The third, who police believe may have been Asian, was wearing grey skater-type shoes and black pants.

The lockdown ended at around 3:45 p.m., according to the Vancouver Police Department's official Twitter feed.

A Vancouver School Board source confirmed that visitors were also prohibited from entering David Livingstone Elementary School for an undisclosed period of time Monday afternoon, but classes were not disrupted.
