A shipwrecked American sailor who was rescued off the northern tip of Vancouver Island on Wednesday has been detained by authorities, who say is he inadmissible to Canada.

Police declined to identify his name or citizenship, citing privacy reasons, but CTV News has confirmed that he is Keith Carver of Arizona.

Police said they could not elaborate on what made him inadmissible to the country.

A private helicopter pilot spotted the man along the shoreline near Kyuquot, B.C., on Wednesday, picked him up, and took him to Port MacNeill Hospital.

The man told authorities his sailboat had run aground during bad weather five days earlier.

The 40-foot boat is completely destroyed, RCMP spokesman Cpl. Darren Lagan told ctvbc.ca.

Lagan said the man will remain in custody until officers with the Canada Border Service Agency talk to the man and determine his status in Canada.

Police said there is no criminal investigation against the man.
