Advocates hope an early-morning protest in downtown Vancouver is a wake-up call for police, not the homeless.

Residents living around Oppenheimer Park on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside have rallied this morning to protect those who regularly sleep in the park.

They are concerned that police are ticketing the homeless, seizing their possessions and even threatening them with arrest if they continue to use the park as a shelter.

No police sweeps occurred this morning but Pivot Legal Society says it intends to challenge any tickets issued under a city by-law restricting camping on city land.
