Enhanced security measures and carry-on restrictions continue at YVR amid news that Transport Canada has commissioned the RCMP to aid security operations at a handful of Canadian airports.
Mounties attended airports in Toronto, Calgary and Edmonton to conduct secondary searches and passenger pat-downs on Tuesday, while Montreal Police aided airport personnel at the city's Pierre Elliot Trudeau Airport.
Sgt. Rob Vermeulen said Transport Canada had not yet requested the B.C. RCMP's services, but that officers were maintaining a presence at YVR.
"Due to the large volume in the U.S. pre-screening area, we are providing a visible presence to maintain order," Vermeulen said.
"Public safety is paramount, so if we're asked to aid further we will certainly do so."
New security measures, which were added in response to an alleged terrorist attempt on Christmas Day, remain in effect.
In addition to regular luggage inspections, passengers can expect a mandatory pat-down and an additional hand search of their personal property at the boarding gate.
All U.S.-bound guests are also advised that they cannot bring any carry-on baggage, with the following exceptions:
- Small purses, diaper bags
- Cameras
- Coats
- Laptop computers
- Crutches, canes and walkers
- Containers with life-sustaining items
- Medication or medical devices
- Musical instruments
Wheeled bags are prohibited and existing restrictions for liquids, aerosols and gels are still in effect.
Passengers flying within Canada are still permitted the standard two carry-on bags, but are asked to adhere to U.S. carry-on restrictions out of courtesy to ensure the screening process runs quickly and efficiently.
A release from Transport Canada suggests the zero carry-on policy will last for "several days."
