All flights leaving Vancouver International Airport Monday morning were delayed at least 30 minutes because of a widespread computer malfunction -- adding to an already hectic day because of new security measures introduced after an attempted terrorist attack.
An airport spokesperson said all of YVR's computer systems went down around 9 a.m., forcing all airlines to check in passengers manually for domestic and international flights.
All airline systems were restored by 12:45 p.m., but backlogs meant most flights were still delayed up to an hour. Passengers are asked to check on the status of their flights before arriving at the facility and ensure they have ample time to check in and go through security.
Several tough new security measures were added at YVR this weekend in response to an attempted bombing on a Northwest Airlines flight on Christmas Day.
In addition to regular luggage inspections, passengers can now expect a mandatory pat-down and an additional hand search of their personal property at the boarding gate.
Transport Canada is advising all U.S.-bound guests that they cannot bring on any carry-on baggage, with the following exceptions:
- Small purses, diaper bags
- Cameras
- Coats
- Laptop computers
- Crutches, canes and walkers
- Containers with life-sustaining items
- Medication or medical devices
- Musical instruments
Wheeled bags are prohibited and existing restrictions for liquids, aerosols and gels are still in effect.
Some passengers flying to the United Sates had to wait an additional two hours before boarding their flights from YVR Sunday.
WestJet says these heightened security measures will be in place until Dec. 30. Air Canada did not specify a date.
