The family of an 11-year-old boy who was filmed participating in the mayhem of the Stanley Cup riot in downtown Vancouver says he will attend counselling and offer an apology to police.
The preteen's mother told CTV News she was devastated to see the shocking images of her son smashing windows at The Bay.
She said he was caught up in the excitement, and that his teenage relatives did not intervene.
The man who filmed the boy after the Canucks' Game 7 loss has asked not to be identified, but said he has never seen such a young child act out so violently.
"I was disgusted," he told CTV News. "This kid had such anger and bravado, I guess, in front of everybody."
But the young boy may not be the only child who got caught up in the frenzy. The Surrey School Board confirmed Thursday it has received information suggesting other students may have been involved in the violence as well.
"The district has received photos and videos from concerned citizens who say that they believe that the people in the photographs may attend a Surrey school," said district spokesman Doug Strachan. "
Strachan said some teachers have used the riot as a teaching moment, but it's up to police to pursue charges and investigate any crimes that took place.
