The IIO is investigating a police-involved incident involving the death of an elderly man in the Fraser Valley Wednesday morning.

At around 6:15 a.m., police responded to reports of a man holding an object believed to be a knife near his stomach in the 1500-block of MacKay Crescent in Agassiz.

The man was eventually subdued and taken into custody, according to Mounties. BC Ambulance was called as he appeared to have self-inflicted injuries, but the man died on the way to hospital.

RCMP confirmed an officer sustained a non-life threatening knife injury during the incident, but has since been treated and released from the hospital.

Police tape surrounded the retirement home Cheam Village for most of Wednesday morning, and multiple ambulances were parked outside. Authorities haven’t confirmed that’s where the incident took place.

The identity of the deceased man has yet to be released.

Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact the IIO at 1-855-446-8477 (TIPS). The IIO is B.C.’s police watchdog, conducting investigations into officer-related incidents of serious harm or death.
