An issue we hear about quite regularly is why people are not getting the advertised rates on phone cards when they call long distance.

The Competition Bureau is now taking action.

Phone cards are not supposed to hide fees in fine print. The Competition Bureau reminded companies of the rules last year.

At a minimum, businesses should:

  • Disclose the effective rate per minute and the number of minutes available on the card
  • Disclose any conditions that might adversely affect the advertised rates -- not in a small font or on a background that makes it hard to read.

The bottom line is that you should get the rate promised to you.

Investigations

Phonetime, which makes the 'Bravo' phone card, has to pay $300,000 in penalties and costs following an investigation into hidden fees and higher per-minute rates and fewer minutes than advertised.

The company is now offering refunds to people who have bought the Bravo cards and still have a proof of purchase.

The Competition Bureau warns that any company found to be misleading consumers could become the target of an investigation.

If you have the Bravo card contact Phonetime at 1-877-404-0046 for more information on your refund.
