Drug gangs were the topic of talks in Victoria on Monday between Attorney-General Wally Oppal and three of his counterparts from Mexico.

Oppal said B.C. gets much of its cocaine from Mexico. As police in Mexico clamp down on the cocaine supply there, it is having a deadly effect here. It means B.C. drug dealers are fighting for a shrinking supply of the valuable drug.

Oppal says the violence surrounding drug gangs is responsible for around 1,000 murders in Mexico since January, and dozens of shootings -- and 17 deaths -- in Metro Vancouver.

Oppal says the Mexican officials may ask him to allow some B.C. justice officials to work in their country to toughen their court system.

"I think that we need to share information and that we interact with other people on our continent because others are experiencing the same level of violence," said Oppal.

Amid this war, politicians are looking for allies.

But they didn't offer any specifics. That will be left for a future meeting.
