A man's plan to collect chestnuts over the Thanksgiving weekend turned tragic when the Mission-area resident was struck by a passing train.

Police say the 67-year-old man was picking chestnuts near the CP Rail tracks in Lake Errock in Agassiz Saturday morning when a train heading eastbound came around the corner.

The senior was standing in between two crossings. He was apparently trying to get out of the way when he was struck by the passing train.

Mission RCMP and B.C. Ambulance paramedics were called to the scene on Harrison Bay Road, but there was little they could do.

The man died of his injuries. His identity has not been released.
