VANCOUVER - An overhaul of British Columbia's health system over the next three years is aimed at offering patients expanded hours of access and more services from medical practitioners.
Premier John Horgan says the government wants to shift to a system that gives patients a wider range of options in team-based and primary care networks.
Team-based care links family medical practices with a range of specialized and standard services in communities.
The government will fund 200 new doctors to work in the team-based model as well as 200 new nurse practitioners, which were announced Wednesday.
The government says it will establish primary care networks in 70 per cent of B.C. communities over the next three years, with the first five in Burnaby, Comox, Prince George, Richmond and South Okanagan-Similkameen.
Health Minister Adrian Dix says there are 780,000 people in B.C. without primary-care doctor or nurse practitioner.
