A Vancouver Island Mountie is facing charges after allegedly using a government credit card to make "improper" purchases while on duty.

Cpl. Tony Spink, a Special Investigations Unit member operating out of Victoria, is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 1 on two counts of fraud under $5,000.

Mounties have not revealed the nature of Spink's alleged purchases, but Insp. Blair Staples issued a statement Monday describing them as "questionable expenses."

"I am extremely disappointed in the alleged actions of Cpl. Spink," Staples added.

Spink has been suspended with pay, but the RCMP says the corporal was served a Notice of Intent to Recommend Stoppage of Pay and Allowances on Friday. He is also the subject of an internal RCMP Code of Conduct investigation.

The RCMP says it will not provide further information while the case is before the courts.
