Family and friends of a young Surrey woman who was brutally stabbed to death in front of her colleagues have organized a memorial in her honour.

Ravinder Bhangu will be remembered at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of the Vedic Hindu Cultural Society on 140th Street, just blocks from the Sach Di Awaaz newspaper office where she was killed last week.

Mickey Gill, the newspaper's publisher, said Bhangu's coworkers have been struggling to make sense of the tragedy.

"It's hard to look over and not see her sitting there," Gill told ctvbc.ca. "She's someone who's going to be missed for a long time."

Gill described the 24-year-old, who worked as an administrative assistant at the paper, as a genuinely good person and a dependable employee. He said Wednesday's memorial will be a "step towards closure" for those who were close to her.

Bhangu's husband, Manmeet Singh, has been charged with first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault in her death.

Friends say Bhangu had left him and was living with her aunt for months before she died. She had also been teaching traditional dance to young girls in the community in her spare time.

Singh is scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 5. Anyone with information on the murder is asked to call the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team at 1-877-551-IHIT.
