A man in his 20s underwent life-saving surgery Wednesday morning at a Metro Vancouver hospital following a vicious stabbing and slashing attack in Maple Ridge.

Ridge Meadows RCMP say officers found the man suffering life-threatening injuries lying on a busy section of Dewdney Trunk Road around 3:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call.

Insp. Darren Lench told CTV News the victim suffered a number of wounds on his hands and arms from an edged weapon, possibly a knife, machete or sword. He also suffered head injuries.

The road was closed for several hours as forensic teams collected blood and other evidence.

Police believe a nearby home may be connected to the attack, which they say is likely targeted.

"We don't know if this is a fight that went bad or some other kind of criminal activity," Lench said. "It's not random."

Police have yet to identify a suspect and the weapon has not been located.
