A 34-year-old man has been given a 38 month jail term for concealing a loaded handgun in his carry-on luggage at the Vancouver International Airport this fall.
RCMP say Shannon Rennie was caught with the .38 Ladysmith revolver when he was attempting to fly to Ontario on Nov. 17.
He was stopped at airport screening around 6 a.m. when his bag went through x-ray inspection.
"As the bag passed CATSA noticed an image resembling a handgun," Cpl Jennifer Pound wrote in a release.
"RCMP were on scene within minutes and also viewed the image on screen."
A search of Rennie's bag revealed the gun, as well as extra ammunition, Pound said. He was arrested at the scene.
Rennie was convicted for carrying a prohibited weapon and storing a firearm with ammunition illegally.
Mounties don't know Rennie's motivation for bringing a loaded handgun on a plane.
"It's hard to imagine what goes through the mind of someone attempting to transport a firearm in their carry on bag," Pound said.
"At this point we just need to get to the bottom of why he was carrying a firearm and why he made such a bold move in attempting to transport it."
He is also prohibited from owning firearms for 10 years.
