A 24-year-old Kelowna man was killed at his birthday party this weekend after he was thrown from the roof of his friend's car while he was car-surfing.

Jody Dun was camping with a group of friends on the west side of Okanagan Lake to celebrate his birthday Friday when police say he and a friend decided to go for a drive – with Dun standing on the roof of the moving vehicle.

Dun was holding on to the top of the Pontiac Sunfire when it veered out of control on a logging road and tumbled down a 17-metre embankment. The victim was thrown from the roof of the car and crushed. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kelowna RCMP say there is no evidence of alcohol or drugs in the fatal stunt. The 26-year-old driver, who is from Estevan, Saskatchewan, faces charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and criminal negligence causing death.

Const. Steve Holmes said the driver and the victim had been friends for many years.

His vehicle has been seized for a mechanical inspection and forensic testing. The accused is scheduled to appear in Kelowna provincial court on Dec. 12.

The victim was supposed to turn 25 on Tuesday.
