Inderjit Singh Reyat, the only person ever convicted in the 1985 Air India bombing, wants out of jail.

Reyat has been behind bars for 20 years as a result of two convictions related to the incident that claimed 331 lives in a blast off the coast of Ireland.

His lawyer, Ian Donaldson, asked the B.C. Court of Appeal Wednesday to reconsider bail to allow his client to be free while he awaits a January 2009 perjury trial.

He's accused of lying more than two dozen times while testifying as a Crown witness in the recent trial that ended in acquittals for two other men charged in the two Air India bombings 23 years ago.

Reyat has served two manslaughter sentences for his role in the bombing of Air India Flight 182 and a blast at Tokyo's Narita Airport in June of 1985.

Evidence at the hearing is under a publication ban.

The judge has yet to make her decision.
