The pilot of a small plane that crashed in Nelson, B.C., Monday afternoon has died.

The 57-year-old pilot from Trail, B.C., was able to tell RCMP officials earlier in the day via cell phone that he had suffered a broken leg and other injuries but was unable to tell them where he was.

Authorities began a ground and air search of an area near Marsden Road and Highway 3A. The search was hampered by low cloud cover, steep terrain and dense brush.

About five hours later, search and rescuers finally found the pilot and the plane, an older model Cessna.

CPR was performed on the pilot but he could not be revived.

The man's identity was withheld until his family could be notified.
