Emergency crews in southwestern British Columbia were dealing with two separate plane crashes on Thursday, one in the rural Vancouver suburb of Pitt Meadows, the other on Vancouver Island.

Ridge Meadows RCMP, and provincial transportation officials are investigating a plane crash at the Pitt Meadows Airport, police said.

A single engine Cessna 172 aircraft experienced problems as it was taking off at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The 77-year-old local pilot, and sole occupant, tried to land the plane, but it flipped over during the landing. The pilot received facial and abdominal injuries, but they are believed to be non-life threatening, police said. He was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital by the Air Ambulance.

Meanwhile, on Vancouver Island three people have walked away without a scratch, after the small plane they were in crashed on the highway to Youbou.

People travelling on the road couldn't believe it when they saw the small plane faltering in the sky, and then nose-diving toward the road.

It's too early to say what caused the crash, but the people in the plane, and the people on the ground are just glad no one was hurt.
