A 31-year-old Vancouver man with a history of mental illness, is facing several charges, including aggravated assault, after allegedly attacking several people in the city's Davie Street area, Sunday night.

" A hammer, two knives, and an imitation gun were found on this man," said Vancouver Police Const. Jana McGuinness.

The downtown spree began after the man fled a store without paying for some items.

Police say he then went to a lounge, where he hit six people, knocking one of them unconscious. He then went to a nearby restaurant patio, where he hit two women and a man.

In total, nine people were hit, and six had to be taken to hospital. But luckily most of the injuries were not serious.

One of the victims was Majestic Nightclub manager Richard Chevrier. He needed stitches to the back of his head, after being attacked with a hammer.

"I have a headache and I'm a little sore and dazed. But I'm all right," he said.

The hammer-wielding man was attacking people in the club's beer garden. He took a swing at Richard, before taking off.

"He had a long wig, black bolero hat, black jacket and pants,'' Chevrier said

As police flooded into the area, a number of people jumped the man police call `emotionally disturbed,' and held him until the officers arrived.
