Rain and cool temperatures is the last thing most people want on the Labour Day long weekend, but it's welcome news for British Columbians forced to evacuate their homes because of forest fires.

Fire activity has decreased throughout much of the province and some of the evacuation orders that were put in place now have been rescinded.

About 250 residents forced from their homes by the Martin Mountain blaze, east of Kamloops and near the town of Pritchard, were allowed to return Friday afternoon.

The 22-square-kilometre blaze is still just 50 per cent contained, meaning about 430 residents remain on evacuation alert.

Another 100 residents who were affected by the Kelly Creek wildfire, near Clinton, also returned home Friday afternoon after their evacuation order was lifted.

Residents evacuated from about 100 properties near Sorrento have been told they will be allowed back Sunday and Monday after the Notch Hill blaze was hit by 10 to 15 millimetres of rain in recent days.
