The force that polices Metro Vancouver's SkyTrain says a man who was dragged along a platform before being slammed into a wall was helped by a hero who did everything right.

"The citizen was all over this," said Staff Sgt. Ken Schinkel, of the region's transit police. "He was someone who helped from the get-go."

Schinkel said video shows two passengers getting into an argument while exiting a train in Surrey Thursday night.

He said it appears to have started as a verbal exchange, but then one man lunged at the other and "staggered toward the train."

Schinkel said the man fell to the ground and his leg became wedged between the edge of the platform and the train as the train departed the station.

The man's leg broke as he was dragged to the end of the platform, where he smashed into a wall. Schinkel said his elbow is also broken and doctors are concerned he has a head injury.

The man is in serious condition in hospital.

Police are trying to find the other passenger involved in the scuffle, though Schinkel said it's unlikely charges will be laid.

Schinkel wouldn't say who the hero is, but said the bystander performed first aid and quickly applied a tourniquet to the man's mangled leg.

When asked if the force was planning anything to honour his actions, Schinkel replied: "We always like to look after people who look after others."
