One man is dead and one is in critical condition in hospital after a shooting Saturday evening in Montreal's Rosemont district.

The attack occurred around 7:30 p.m., as the men crossed 30th Ave. southbound at Belanger St. The assailants fled on foot, said police.

"They were gunned down by more than one suspect," said Montreal police Const. Daniel Lacoursiere.

The 24-year old man died shortly after being transferred to hospital.

The 37-year-old man, who is clinging to life, was known to police, said Lacoursiere.

The major crimes division was on the scene as police spent the evening setting up an extensive perimeter around the crime scene, as well as speaking with witnesses and looking for clues that could lead them to suspects.

There is no word yet on a motive for the shooting.

The incident rattled neighbours and nearby business owners.

Carmello Marinese, who owns Cafe Porto, said the incident happened very quickly.

"One guy was behind the car, and one guy was in front of the building. I remember one guy was trying to give the guy CPR, with his hands over his heart," he said.

Pauline Bonilla, who lives directly in front of the murder scene, said she went outside when she heard the gunshots.

"The two men were on the road... I think he was shot in the head, because his head was bleeding," she said.

This is the third homicide of the year in Montreal.
