B.C. motorists are getting new driver's licences and now the government is rolling out a new law that will apply tough penalties for fraud involving the cards.

Anyone convicted of getting or using the cards illegally could face a fine of 400 to $20,000, on top of an existing maximum term of six months behind bars.

The same penalties will apply to the enhanced driver's licence which comes out later this year allowing travel to the U.S. by land or sea without a passport.

ICBC can also seize fraudulent documents used to apply for any driver's licences or I.D. cards.

Solicitor General John van Dongen introduced the amendments at the legislature on Wednesday.
