Marchers will wind their way through southwest Vancouver streets this morning to demand protection of an ancient burial site.
Members of the Musqueam First Nation say condo development is threatening the four-thousand-year-old Marpole midden, an aboriginal village and burial ground considered one of the most important archeological sites in Canada.
Work is underway on a residential and commercial development along the banks of the Fraser River but the Musqueam say human remains have already been unearthed -- and urgent action is needed to protect the midden, which dates back to the first pyramids in Egypt.
The chiefs of the Musqueam and Tsawwassen bands, as well as Union of BC Indian Chiefs Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, will take part in the march, which begins at 9 a.m. at 70th Avenue and Granville Street.
