B.C. Ferries busiest route has been reduced to one vessel after the Spirit of British Columbia broke down Tuesday between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay.

The company did have an alternative ferry -- the Queen of Vancouver -- lined up to replace it, but that was also taken out of commission because of mechanical problems.

The breakdown has lead to several sailing cancellations Wednesday morning, including the 7:00 a.m. sailing out of Tsawwassen and the 9:00 a.m. from Swartz Bay.

B.C. Ferries usually runs two ships on the route during weekdays and spokesperson Mark Stefanson says they'll be back to that number this morning.

"We're hoping to activate one of the two vessels for the 11:00 am sailing out of Tsawwassen," he told CTV News.

Several of B.C. Ferries ships have suffered mechanical problems over the last week. Stefanson attributes this to bad luck.

"They're huge mechanical operating systems and you have problems from time to time that is just the very nature of it," he said. "It's not like they aren't without their issues, sometimes they come in clusters and sometimes we go long periods without an issue."
