A stubborn blaze at a Port Moody apartment complex forced dozens for people from their homes Wednesday afternoon.

The flames broke out shortly after noon at a building in the 900-block of Clarke Road, and continued burning for more than five hours despite firefighters’ efforts.

Crews contained the blaze by around 3 p.m. but it remained active into the evening.

The building sustained extensive fire damage, but all 50 units were safely evacuated.

An adjacent apartment building was also cleared out as a precaution. Displaced residents of both buildings have been told to gather at the Kyle Centre recreation facility.

More than 20 police officers and two separate fire departments were dispatched to the scene, along with victim services personnel.

The cause of the blaze hasn’t been determined.
