A man was shot late Tuesday night in the doorway of a home in Surrey, B.C., and Mounties believe a dispute over debt may have motivated the attack.

Officers were called to the 12400-block of 53rd Avenue shortly after 11 p.m. and found a man in his 30s suffering serious but non-life threatening gunshot wounds to his back.

Sgt. Alexandra Mulvihill said the shooting does not appear to have been gang-related, but "the victim did know the people who shot him."

"We're trying to gather as much information as we can to positively identify those people," she said.

Mulvihill said it was too early to confirm whether the victim, who was transported to hospital via helicopter, is known to police.

Two suspects who fled the area in a vehicle are sought, but Mounties have yet to release descriptions of the men.

Investigators say an altercation preceded the attack, possibly over a debt owed.
