A New Westminster, B.C., police constable has been demoted, suspended without pay and ordered to take counselling after he admitted that he kicked a suspect in the head at the end of a police chase.

Actions like those of Const. Todd Sweet won't be tolerated in the police department, said New Westminster Police Chief Lorne Zapotichny in a release.

"No matter what the outcome, neither I, nor any of my officers, will tolerate the mistreatment of those in our custody," he said.

Sweet and the other officers under investigation co-operated with the investigation, officials said.

In June 2005, Const. Todd Sweet was involved in the pursuit of a driver he admitted to kicking once in the head.

Sweet was later charged with assault causing bodily harm and the police internal investigation went to Saanich police on for a disciplinary decision.

Saanich is a suburb of Victoria.

Saanich Deputy Chief Clayton Pecknold has ruled that Sweet be demoted from first-class to third-class constable, that he receive a five-day suspension and get more counseling and training.
