VANCOUVER - Martin Jones made 33 saves for his first shutout of the season as the Calgary Hitmen blanked the Vancouver Giants 2-0 in Western Hockey League action Friday night.
Jones, a 19-year-old North Vancouver, B.C., native who is in the running to play for Canada's world junior team, helped the Hitmen steal a win after being outshot 33-22.
The Central Division-leading Hitmen (13-4-0) moved into first place overall in the WHL, three points ahead of the Western Division-leading Giants (10-4-3).
Brandon Kozun scored in the first period and Ian Schultz added an empty-netter for the Hitmen, who entered the game as the top-ranked major junior team in the country.
The Giants dominated the first period, but trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes as Jones, a Los Angeles Kings prospect who has already signed with the NHL club, robbed Sebastien Svendsen and Brandon Scholten.
Vancouver netminder Jamie Tucker stopped 20 shots.
Bruins Stomp Blazers 7-1
KAMLOOPS - The Chilliwack Bruins got goals from seven different players Friday night as they pummelled the Kamloops Blazers 7-1 in Western Hockey League action.
Mitch McColm, Roman Horak, David Robinson, Kevin Sundher, Ryan Howse, Tim Traber and Dylen McKinlay all scored for the Bruins (6-6-4), who have won two in a row.
Matej Bene replied for Kamloops (8-8-2), which has lost six straight. The Blazers were playing their first game since head coach Barry Smith was fired on Monday. Assistant coach Scott Ferguson was promoted to interim head coach.
Spokane Chiefs top Kelowna Rockets
KELOWNA - Kyle Beach had a three-point night for Spokane, with two goals and one assist, as the Chiefs posted a 4-3 victory over the Kelowna Rockets in Western Hockey League action on Friday night.
Tyler Johnson also scored two goals for Spokane (6-5-1-0), which ended a two-game losing streak.
Tyson Barrie had two goals and Mitchell Callahan replied for Kelowna (8-7-1-0), which fell to 6-3-1-0 on home ice this season.
Adam Brown made 31 saves for the Rockets, while Michael Tadjdeh turned aside 31 shots for the Chiefs.
