The man who blew up several stores on West Broadway Wednesday morning is recovering in Vancouver General Hospital's burn unit.

Police say he checked himself into Surrey Memorial Hospital with burns covering 40 per cent of his body. Hospital officials called police.

The man has not been charged -- or named -- pending his recovery.

The man used an accelerant to set off an explosion that destroyed a Taco Del Mar restaurant and severely damaged several nearby shops at approximately 2:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Damages to the area are estimated at two million dollars, including structural damage to a nearby medical building.

The investigation is ongoing.
