Mounties in Burnaby, B.C., are investigating a suspicious death after a man's body was discovered in a burned out car in the middle of a residential neighbourhood Thursday morning.

Cpl. Brenda Gresiuk says RCMP and Burnaby Fire were called to a vehicle blaze in the intersection of Clinton and Plum Streets just before 4:00 a.m.

The body was found inside the vehicle once the fire was extinguished.

"The body was engulfed in flames and unrecognizable," Gresiuk told ctvbc.ca.

B.C.'s Integrated Homicide Team, along with the RCMP Major Crimes Unit, are now investigating.

The incident is being treated as a "suspicious death," and police are falling short of calling the incident a homicide at this time.

"We're at the very early stages of the investigation," Gresiuk said. "There could be multiple scenarios here and that will come out in the evidence."

Yellow tarpaulins cover the hood and part of the driver's side of the car. Extensive burn damage to the vehicle has prevented officials from identifying the make and model of the four-door silver sedan.

Police have taped off a large area around the intersection, including an alley behind the houses where several evidence markers are visible.

Investigators are expected to canvas area residents to see if anyone saw or heard anything suspicious around the time of the fire.
