The start of a new school year is an exciting time for many kids, but shopping for school supplies can put a strain on parents’ finances.  So CTV’s consumer reporter Lynda Steele went shopping at four major stores to compare prices and see where the best deals are at.

The four stores were Walmart, Superstore, Target and Staples. There were a few challenges finding the exact items at some stores, and prices change week-to-week, but there were savings to be had.

For starters, we compared BIC Cristal pens in a 10-pack:

  • Superstore - 97 cents
  • Walmart - $1.68
  • Target - $1.69
  • Staples - $1.76 (12 pack)

Lined, recycled refill paper (150 sheets):

  • Walmart - $2.00
  • Staples - $3.29

     (Non-recycled refill paper)

  • Superstore – 15 cents
  • Target – 15 cents (200 sheets)

A pack of eight Crayola markers:

  • Staples - $2.96
  • Superstore - $2.97
  • Walmart - $4.72
  • Target - $4.74

BIC shimmer pens (14 pack):

  • Target - $1.99
  • Walmart - $2.96
  • Staples - $2.99
  • Superstore - $ 2.99

Overall, we saved the most money at Superstore, followed by Walmart and Target. Staples was the most expensive. But keep in mind this was only on the day we shopped – prices change and some items differed slightly.

Many stores have price-matching policies. If you don't want to go store-to-store to get each deal you can often show a competitor’s flyer at the cashier and get the deal.
