An autopsy will be done to identify the man discovered dead in a rural area of Pitt Meadows, B.C. on Tuesday.

Mounties were first called to 224th Street near 144th Avenue at around 11 a.m. after the deceased's body was discovered face down in a muddy field by a passerby.

"The male victim appears to have met with foul play and homicide is suspected," Sgt. Jennifer Pound said in a release. "The age and identity of the victim is unknown at this time."

Police say they cannot confirm if the man is known to them or if the body had been dumped at the site.

Originally, police informed media outlets the dead man was discovered in Maple Ridge, but have corrected their reports to say he was actually found in Pitt Meadows.
