A 22-year-old Chilliwack resident has been charged with stabbing an older man who told him and his friends not to litter on the street, police say.

Christopher John Nadin is facing counts of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon in connection with the Nov. 11, 2011 attack, which left a 43-year-old in the Chilliwack General Hospital intensive care unit.

More than two months later, Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth said the victim is still recovering from his injuries at home.

"He can't work and is regularly attending doctors and specialist appointments as one of his lungs is not functioning properly," Hollingsworth said.

"It will be a long road to recovery for him, but he is glad to be out of the hospital and alive."

Mounties say the victim was walking his dog when he saw a group of three younger men and a woman throwing disposable cups on the ground. He asked them to put the trash into a nearby garbage can, and when they refused he did it himself.

A verbal argument ensued, ending with the victim being pepper sprayed and stabbed.

Nadin has been released from custody on several conditions. He is scheduled to appear in court in early 2013.
