Vancouver police are asking witnesses to come forward after an 80-year-old man was allegedly shoved to the ground and later died.

Police believe witnesses, possibly including an off-duty firefighter, were there when Yee Wong was allegedly pushed and fell to the ground in an altercation on McGill near Windermere Street Friday morning.

Wong suffered a head injury in the fall and was conscious when paramedics arrived and took him to hospital, according to police, but the 80-year-old man’s condition quickly deteriorated and he was pronounced dead.

Police arrested and released a 45-year-old Vancouver man following the incident.

“It is important that detectives speak to these witnesses to get an accurate account of what happened to the victim,” Sgt. Randy Fincham said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Vancouver police at 604-717-2500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
