Thousands of people gathered for a massive party in Grandview Park on Commercial Drive in celebration of May Day and International Workers’ Day Friday night.

Police shut down the Drive between Venables Street and East First Avenue as the revelers spilled out of the park after 9 p.m.

More than 15,000 people responded on Facebook that they would be attending the party, though only about 3,000 showed up in the park.

Police said Saturday that one person was stabbed during the festivities and three were arrested. The stabbing victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The vast majority of attendees celebrated peacefully.

Organizers billed the party as loosely affiliated with May Day festivities around the city earlier in the day, as well as celebrations and protests around the world.

Families with children spent much of the evening enjoying live music and a spirited atmosphere. Several attendees told CTV News the atmosphere was more party than protest.

“It’s pretty cool,” said one man. “We watched some pretty interesting xylophone players that had some rhythm going on.”

“I love seeing a community together and peacefully dancing and children happy,” said a young woman. “It’s my favourite thing.”

The relatively subdued atmosphere on the Drive was a contrast to protests happening south of the border in Seattle at the same time.

There, hundreds took to the streets in protest, clashing with police, lighting fires, and damaging vehicles. Police described the event as a riot, and used “flashbangs” and pepper spray in an attempt to get the crowd under control.

Three officers were reportedly injured and 16 people were arrested.
