Update on Dec. 3:

Surrey RCMP say the shot teen is not cooperating with police. Investigators believe the shooting is part of a “pre-arranged altercation” involving multiple young people from two different groups. It’s not believed the incident is linked to the spate of recent gun violence plaguing the city. The victim remains in hospital in stable condition.

Previous story:

A 17-year-old is in hospital after he was shot outside Prince Charles Elementary School in Surrey Tuesday night.

The teen was on the basketball court when he was approached by two other males and shot in the leg.

Paramedics treated the boy on the court before being rushed to hospital in stable condition.

A police dog was brought in to sweep the playing fields and officers bagged several items at the scene.

The motive for the shooting is unclear and the investigation is still in its infancy, say police.

One witness told CTV Morning Live he heard half a dozen shots, and thought it was fireworks.

“It was scary. You don’t know if you’re going to make it home at the end of your workday,” he told CTV’s Nafeesa Karim.

The school board has no current plan to send notices home with parents.

Spokesperson Doug Strachan said they will monitor the situation at the school.

“I think we are like everyone else in the community shocked of anything of this sort, that someone was shot, let alone a young boy,” he said.

Both suspects are described as white males between the ages of 17 and 22. Both were wearing scarves covering their faces.
