A Vancouver Park Board commissioner is facing impaired driving charges after she fell asleep at the wheel of her car - and drove into a house.

It happened on the 6100 block of Ross Street in southeast Vancouver on May 23. No one was injured, but the damage to the house is substantial.

The commissioner is Constance Barnes, the daughter of longtime MLA Emery Barnes. On Wednesday, she faced the public and admitted her mistake.

"I want to make it clear that I take full responsibility for my actions," Barnes said.

"While I do not in any way excuse my serious mistake, this incident follows a time of deep personal struggle."

Barnes is taking a medical leave from her position with the Park Board. She plans to plead guilty to three impaired driving charges at her next court appearance on June 29.
