One of two police officers involved in the mistaken – and violent – arrest of an East Vancouver man has been reassigned to administrative duties pending the outcome of an internal investigation, Vancouver police announced Tuesday afternoon.

Last Thursday, two plain-clothed officers were responding to a domestic violence call. They didn’t realize that the house they were responding to had two residences with separate entrances.

Yao Wei Wu, 44, says when he answered the door, the officers immediately yanked him outside and beat him to the ground.

Wu, who doesn’t speak English, suffered a swollen eye, as well as bruising and cuts to his body.

It turned out that the woman who had called the police lived in a downstairs suite. Wu lives upstairs.

Vancouver police Chief Jim Chu later personally apologized to Wu and promised a full investigation.

The Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner has been notified about the case and is monitoring the progress of the internal investigation.
