A man armed with a hatchet disturbed a quiet Sunday afternoon in Nanaimo by running across rooftops, jumping over fences and yelling, according to RCMP.

The 25-year-old Nanaimo resident was acting in a bizarre manner as he ran from yard to yard, and held the hatchet to his throat at times, according to 911 callers.

When police arrived, they found the man on a rooftop in the 6000-block of Brickyard Road in a residential part of Nanaimo’s north end. They said he ignored police commands and tried to run away, and that’s when officers used a Taser to subdue him.

It took at least six officers to get the man into handcuffs, according to RCMP.

They took the man to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for an assessment after arresting him for various weapons charges.

No one was injured in the incident, and police say the investigation is continuing.
